So we've updated our review with the new phone software, and thankfully things are a lot better now. The battery is improved, the camera a little more stable, and the low cost is still in place.

You already know we like Android 4.4, the clever implementation and the £299 price tag. We love the high power CPU, the quality screen; even the rubberised outer shell.

You can get the LG G2 for £100 more though, and that offers a far superior camera, better battery life (it's better, but not brilliant) and a huge slew of extra features - it really depends if you're a fan of the stripped-down experience.

Quick verdict

We're glad to put this smartphone higher up in the rankings, as it's one of the cheapest out there in terms of bang for buck.

It's a great phone that hits the marks well - it lacks something in terms of innovation, but that's not a problem for those that want to be able to run all manner of apps and games at a decent price. It doesn't come in at the same price point as previous Nexii, but it's still jolly cheap.

How can the note 3 be so low? The only reason is size but that is subjective and not a reason to lower its ranking. It is superior to all phones above it.

nexus 5 is better than/ on par with the iphone 5s. Its much cheaper, as powerful, and the camera is pretty much equal. Plus it runs android not ios 7 (which is pretty much ios 6 with a new colour scheme).

I have a Nexus 5 and have had no issues with battery life, comfortably does a full day without needing a charge and its much better than my (albeit 16 month old) S3. Great piece of kit and cheap as chips

I may not agree with the positioning of the picks I believe all manufacturers have their strengths and weaknesses. As a Mobile phone shop our experience is that Apple weighs in at the top of the list for arming us with amazing tools and processes to support customers when an issue arises. Seems ludicrous to rate the Blackberry Z10 device so lowly based on the perceived difficulties of the company. Are you reviewing the device or the company? These difficulties have been speculated about for over a year and are the MAIN reason why their products have not received proper acclaim. Amazon recently offered the Z10 sim free for £179. At this price point it becomes the BEST VALUE FOR MONEY SMATPHONE on the market today. Hands down!!

Tech Radar and other so called professional reviewers need to take a long look at themselves for adding to the woes by such tainted reviews. Despite it's troubles Blackberry (RIM) is still here today and fully supporting it's excellent products.

Shame on you!

all u guys against the HTC One are too biased. I had a s4 and thought it was horrible therefore i sold it and bought a HTC One and it was much better. Yes they only mention the body but if you read the full review you will see the differences and the HTC features like Zoe and HTC TV is brilliant

I think reviews would be better given by people who owned one of each of the phones side by side for a long period of time. I have had an S4 and an iphone 5 for some time now and the camera is the only things the S4 has on the Iphone - the Iphone wins on all other including absolute basic failures on the S4 - like not being able to read the screen if the sun is out, try dialing a number like 077..... the phone thinks you are double tapping to zoom in and ....zooms in instead of dialing your number, battery life is poor and charging takes longer than the iphone, its not as fast when accessing apps or internet pages, Samsung have decided you cannot access apps from the lock screen if you have any kind of security applied...... its very poor quality build - the bezel has been dented in every corner of the phone yet I have never dropped ? If I had no preference of Android or Apple and read this review I could make the wrong choice - I only have my 4s as its re sale value is so low now it wouldnt come close to paying off my contract! Its not a good phone!

I feel that this UK website has lost the credibility. The list has become a joke. Editors of this website: Do you really believe your ranking? What is the criteria of your ranking? Can you share? Have you tested the HTC one phones together with other phones? Do you think your favorite HTC one is anything better than the current flagship phones in the market, such as iphone 5S, galaxy note 3, LG G2, Sony Xperia Z1, Sony Xperia Z ultra? If so, please tell us why? The really funny thing is why HTC one mini is in the list? No one here is buying this kind of small phones.

this article has become a joke. HTC One still leading even after it has become outdated by more superior phones like the LG G2 and Xperia Z1? And how come the Xperia Z1 is just in #9? If because it was just a minor upgrade then certainly the iPhone 5s should have been way lower. And how come the HTC One mini is in the top 10? Its just a midrange phone with a flagship name to confuse consumers. Even the Xperia SP has better specs and cheaper price than that phone. This site is really starting to lose its credibility. It has become more and more subjective with its review.

This ranking is not convincing. What is the criteria of the ranking? It is not clear. Why HTC one is in the top position for more than 6 months? If you talk about the design, it is not bad. But if you talk about the overall performance, there are many latest phones which I believe are better than HTC one. Obviously the editor of this website is not favorite of big phones. That is why all big phones have very poor ranking here. For example, Sony Xperia Z ultra is the biggest size phone in the market. In terms of performance, how many phones in the markets right now is better than this phone? Samsung galaxy note 3, for example, only ranked No 6. It is a joke! People won't trust you! Please publish the criteria of ranking so that people are clear. Just want to be fair and clear. Maybe you can have multiple rankings in terms of different criteria.

I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 Active to test as a winter sports blogger. I had 2 main things to look at, whether is really was 100% waterproof and whether you could use it while wearing gloves.

The answer to both of these questions was YES. However, there was an issue with the mic on phone calls which I haven't seen anyone else mention. It sorted itself out though and Samsung do warn about this in their user guide.

Now android phones are faster, have better cameras, better graphics yet bigger screens, are lighter, are stronger, some even waterproof yet you insist that they are rubbish because they are made of a material that makes them lighter... You Samsung fans are just ****** cause you were stupid enough to buy plastic Korean ********, and now according to all that owns a S4, everything out there is **** in your eyes. You guys are just ****** cause you are stuck with the phone for the next 2 years( if you are on contract that is, but nevertheless if you bought it cash, you are also screwed cause your resell value is in its chops). I will never buy a product that makes fridges, stoves, microwaves and many other products and feel proud about their phone quality. Where does their priorities lay in the market?

Would you buy a Samsung car aswell? Or if Sony brougt out a superbike, would you go for it? Stick with the underdog I say who puts all their eggs in the same basket. Samsung is overrated, corporate and commercial gimicksters. They spend millions on marketing and media campaigns. No wonder they had no money and resouces left to actually invest in anything other than Polycarbonate poisoness **** in your hand.

The Xperia Z1 is not the best phone on the market, its far from it. I've used it for 3 weeks now and I hate it.

The bevel is to large around the screen meaning one hand operation is impossible. The large bevel makes it extremely uncomfortable to hold. The touch screen does not lock when you hold it up to your face to call someone meaning your face press buttons. The camera is extremely average and the photos look poor on anything but the phones screen. It takes 2/3 seconds to take a photo making it mostly useless in the situations where you need a mobile camera. Its filled with stupid bloatware like walkman apps, deezer, smart connect etc I have no interest in yet cant remove. Apps constanly crash in the middle of using them, especially email.

Its an extremely poor phone, where they have crammed as much tech into the device without actually making it work as a phone first. I am ebaying it and getting a HTC One.
